What Makes a BigCommerce Store Easier to Manage Over Time?
I've worked on quite a few BigCommerce stores. The ones that were easy to manage weren't the fancy ones. They were just set up well from the start. Here's what I've learned:
- Keep your product details neat. Pick one way to name products and stick to it. I once saw the same item listed three different ways. Fixing it took ages.
- Don't add too many apps. There's an app for everything, but they pile up and slow your store down. Every few months, I check the list and remove the ones nobody uses.
- Keep your theme simple. If too many people make random changes, it gets messy fast. Clean BigCommerce development work, with a few notes in the code, makes future changes much easier.
- Write things down. Shipping rules, tax settings, which tool does what. Even a rough note helps. You won't remember it all in six months.
- Check your store once a month. Look for broken links, slow pages, and old products that should be gone. It takes about 15 minutes and saves a lot of trouble.
- Let tools do the boring work. If you're still updating stock by hand, mistakes will happen. Connecting your store to your other systems takes some time at first, but it's worth it.
Most of this comes down to not rushing the setup. A little planning at the start saves a lot of stress later.
That's my experience. What about you? Is there anything you'd do differently if you set up your store again?
